  • What makes a good Scripps candidate:

    • Most don’t initially think they want to attend a women’s college

    • Known as the mom of their friend group

    • Want challenge, but over the competition of high school social scene

    • Active listeners

    • Contemplative engagement

    • Good at uplifting others

    • Curious, explore interests, interdisciplinary, driven, determined to succeed, supportive


ACADEMIC

  • 10-12 students average class

  • Core curriculum with other Scripps students, all classes in core do the same thing to provide continuity

  • Senior these req for Scripps

  • Discussion based classes

  • Media studies, psych, politics, bio are the most popular

  • Very open use for students to take classes at other schools

  • Encouragement of women’s leadership 

  • Mixed grade level forums

  • All do a core curriculum and senior theses

  • Writing center

  • Many tutoring options


SOCIAL

  • Beach volleyball court, pool

  • Mixers connecting alumni with current students. 

  • Women’s college focuses on support for women and non-binary


CAMPUS

  • Afternoon tea everyday

  • 32 edible plants around Scripps campus

    • Make olive oil from all the olive trees

  • Able to pick roses from the rose garden

  • Graffiti wall - outgoing seniors sign the wall, going back to 1932

  • Internship grants

  • Based loosely on Oxford/Cambridge system

  • About 6 thousand total student population between 5 schools

  • Heavily academic institutions

  • Cross registration is the norm

  • 2,700 classes available to take in the consortium

  • Academic deans work together

  • Same academic calendar

  • Strong benefit of being with students who would not normally have selected a certain college

  • Core requirements for all colleges, but will be different across the campuses 

  • Lived and social interactions

  • Share about 300 clubs and orgs

  • Share musics, dance, and speaker series. 

  • Shared health services and athletics

  • Division 3 athletics

    • 6th street rivalry

    • Pomona/Pitzer vs CMC/Harvey Mudd/Scripps

  • Access to alumni resources across all 5 schools

  • All offer ED options

  • Use CSS profile

  • All consortium schools within 1 square mile

  • Scooby doo analogy: 

    • Pomona is Scooby, 

    • Harvey Mudd is Velma, 

    • CMC is Fred, 

    • Scripps is Daphne, 

    • Pitzer is Shaggy

  • Strong relationship with City of Claremont (known as the city of trees and degrees)

  • Library shared amongst all schools
